Why I’m Liking RootsMagic 7

Errors! That’s Why

I admit I was using Family Tree Maker 2012 and not 2014. I am switching to RootsMagic as my primary “research” database for genealogy.

Larger view of error triangle.Family Tree Maker will create a “data error” report. And so does RootsMagic. But I like this symbol that appears next to a name in RootsMagic. The red triangle with the exclamation points indicates an error with that person.

Also included is how I used the new RootsMagic 7 imports the actual Family Tree Maker file as well as list of errors that the “triangle” might indicate.

Merge Places (Locations) via Your Genealogy Software

RootsMagic, Legacy, & Family Tree Maker can merge places (locations).

A quote: Enter your locations so that there will be no misunderstanding by other researchers as to the location you are trying to express.
Quote from an Oct. 2009 LegacyNews.Typepad
.com site.

Merging places (locations) is similar on all three software programs. While all three programs allow you to merge multiple places (locations) simultaneously, I ***STRONGLY SUGGEST***starting with just two places. To my knowledge there is no “unmerge” if you goof. Trust me on this — it’s far easier to fix one of those if you are only merging two places.

Utilizing the information from prior articles, How to Enter Counties in Genealogy Databases & Using Abbreviations in Locations, you should now know how you want the data to appear on most of everything in places (locations).

[box] When I found the “golden rule” on the Legacy news article (link below), I knew I had to use it on IdoGenealogy.net. (See image.) Between you & me, I felt ever so much better about the way I enter counties after seeing this rule.[/box]

Never hurts to read a few things before you start.

In the following paragraphs are several articles on the merge location action as well as the quick way to find help on this merge within the software.
